Aranna

A map of the continent of Aranna

Aranna is the continent upon which most of the Dungeon Siege series takes place. One of the major power players of old was the Empire of Stars, although much more ancient empires predated it, including that of the Utraeans and that of the Agallan giants.

History

First Age

The First Age begins with the founding of the Empire of Stars and the birth of Zaramoth to the Utgard race. The region of Ehb is discovered by explorers from the Empire of Stars. Zaramoth claims the Empire of Stars as his birthright and begins a long history of oppression. The War of Legions quickly begins as the 10^th Legion of the Empire refuses to acknowledge Zaramoth. The 10^th Legion retreats to and entrenches Ehb, prepared for a bloody war. Azunai is born in the Azunite Tribe on the Azunite Plains. The First Age ends with the war between the Azunites and the Empire of Stars, resulting in the First Great Cataclysm.

Second Age

The Second Age begins right at the end of the First Age, during the First Great Cataclysm. The Dryads are born on Greylyn Isle. The Empire of Stars collapses without a leader in civil war and most regions splinter off into independent city-states while oppressed countries regain their independence. Ehb loses contact with Eastern Aranna and the Empire of Stars, finally granting them the independence they have fought so aggressively for. Lady Montbarron is born a lowly farmer and rises to become the Hero of Ehb after defeating the Seck rebellion. The Goblins of Ehb almost become extinct save for Lady Montbarron's mercy.

Third Age

The Third Age beings right at the end of the Second Age, during the Second Great Cataclysm. Greylyn Isle sinks beneath the ocean during violent storms.

Story

The southeastern portion of Aranna is dominated by the Plain of Tears, the great wasteland left over after the legendary clash between Azunai and Zaramoth there. The Goblin realm of Gonsiir lies south of this region, while the Northern Reaches stretch out from the desert's northernmost border. The mountainous lands near the very heart of the continent hide the Elven homeland of the Vai'lutra Forest, where sits the town of Aman'lu. The former capital of the Empire of Stars, Iliyara, can be found sitting at the heart of a lake known as the Chalice of the Stars, near the heart of the Northern Reaches; and the archipelago known as the Broken Lands sits just off the northeastern coast of the continent.

To the west lies the lands of Lescanza, Mazal, and Rowan, of which little is known. Following the Iron Coast further west, along the northern edge of the Aranoi Desert, is the mountainous region where the town of Arhok is located. Beyond the northwest coast of Aranna lies the tropical Island of the Utraeans. On the southern edge of the Aranoi Desert, one finds the kingdom of Ehb, and the Utraean Peninsula, which both sit along the continent's southwestern coast. Greilyn Isle, the home of the Dryads, once sat in the ocean between Ehb's eastern border and the westernmost shores of the Plain of Tears, but the island was swallowed by the sea during the Second Cataclysm.

Governments

Kingdom of Ehb

The Kingdom of Ehb is ruled by a line of monarchs, who are served by the 10^th Legion. These monarchs have the ability to grant and seize land, and to bestow titles of nobility upon individuals. Under the law, however, all citizens of Ehb are considered equal, even the greatest monarch, as was made clear during the Affair of the Goblin Pretender.

Ehb’s rule at the time of the Seck Resurgence was named Konreid.

Religion

Church of Azunai

The Church of Azunai was the major religion of Aranna throughout the Second Age, and into the Third Age. The members of the Church believed that the ancient hero, Azunai the Defender, ascended to godhood for his deeds in life, most notably for his defiance of Zaramoth the Unmaker, terror of the First Age. Centuries after Azunai’s fateful duel with the tyrant, this belief spread across the continent, from the Plain of Tears in the east, to Ehb and the Utraean Peninsula far to the west.
