The Chicken is an easter egg opponent in Dungeon Siege.
Description[]
Normal chickens inhabit farmland areas in the game as non-interactive ambient creatures, presumably supporting Aranna's economy in the ways chickens in real life do. The big chickens statted-up in this article are encountered in the Chicken Level, and are hostile. Considering these foes' armor, hitpoint, and damage ratings, careful tactics and kiting are generally needed for the player to last very long in this area.
Each inhabitant of the gallus dungeon is named after a member of the development team. Chief designer Chris Taylor is entitled to his own Red Chicken variant. The default name for the creature when generated in a user-made context is "Big Chicken."
The reward for defeating a chicken is a sizeable pile of randomized rare and unique items, and in multiplayer, occasional set items.
Tactics[]
Chickens have a moderate walking speed, and a fast, powerful melee swing.
DS[]
In vanilla Dungeon Siege, the main option available to multiplayer characters, aside from the +drdeath cheat, was to employ someone to hold the chickens' aggro and sidestep them while others pounded it with arrows and spell damage. Weapon mods that proc Freezing or Stunning effects work against the chickens and continue to be useful. Chickens are an unimportant source of experience, so playing the tank/dodger is less objectionable than one would think.
DSLOA[]
Assets made available in the Legends of Aranna campaign have made the chicken level somewhat easier. Invisibility, Respite, Summoned Clones (which can attack through invisibility), and the wide-area, armor-ignoring Glyph spells are especially powerful against chickens.
The Chris Taylor chicken unfortunately lost most of his damage, because he was not specced in Combat Magic. It was not needed in vanilla.
Drops[]
Vanquished chickens drop far more items, especially of rare and unique quality, than other creatures and containers. Individually they are not the highest pcontent values in the game, but they more than compensate for this with the size of their hoard, making them the best overall source of treasure in Dungeon Siege.
Being so strong already, there is but a very slight gradient in the combat strength and the loot tables for Normal, Veteran, and Elite chickens. The Elite world chickens each drop the following:
- 2-4 of either magic weapons (240-320), or magic armor coverage (600-750)
- 1-2 of either rare weapons (240-320), rare armor (600-750), or rare wildcard item (240-320)
- 0-1 of either a unique weapon (240-320), unique armor piece (600-750), or unique wildcard item (240-320)
- 50 percent chance of 3-7 piles of gold, valued 77,972 - 389,860 each
- 50 percent chance of a level 65-105 spell
