Downfall of the Manu Ostar

Shortly after the cataclysm known as Turmanar, when the Aegis of Death was given to the Elves of Aman'lu for safekeeping, some of the greatest mages began to be enthralled by its power. They created many new spells based on the Aegis, and formed a guild to learn more about casting spells dependant on this powerful artifact. They called themselves the Manu Ostar.

The spells channeled through the Aegis were the darkest death magic, and were very difficult to control, but the sorcerers' lust for power consumed them, and made them careless. They began to cast spells that required the might of two mages, then three. Soon they were casting circle spells which required the mana of the entire guild.

"Their greatest work was the Nuuruhuine, a spell that would bring the shadow of death itself under their control. But even with the Aegis to aid them, they were not powerful enough to control the spell; it backfired, and death took over half of the Manu Ostar in one stroke. Those who remained were gravely wounded, and could not be healed. They began to decay without dying, and became more powerful in magic than any thought possible. The elders of Aman'lu feared them and exiled them into the forest. They have come to be known as the Vai'kesh -- 'evil spirits' -- an apt title, now that they so resemble the dead forests.

"To this day they inhabit the dead forests, cursing the Edhel and dreaming of the day when they will again possess the Aegis. They dwell in a living death, and none would now call them Elves. Let this be a warning to all who experiment with artifacts of magic: great power can consume the one who wields it. Though the Edhel are wise, they have ever been cursed with the desire for mastery of all the hidden ways -- a desire that has caused much suffering and death. We must be watchful."
