In an effort to preserve the history of our community, I have determined to set down a record of the events that led us out of the Empire and brought us to the border of Ehb. My story begins in the year 601, with the murder of our emperor and patriarch, Hathra’unok.
Under Hathra’unok’s rule, the Azunite faith had been officially recognized by the Empire, and Azunite shrines had been built in every city and town. But the old nobility—represented, as always, by the 3rd Legion—conspired against the new emperor and raised a coup to unseat him. Hathra’unok was slain as he tried to flee the capital.
With the rightful emperor dead, the commander of the 3rd Legion usurped the Imperial throne, crowning himself Maximander I, or “dragon-tyrant”, after his Legion’s totem-animal. He declared that Azunai’s faith was a heresy, and he returned the Empire to the pagan worship of the Stellar Emperors. His forces hunted down the disciples of Hathra’unok.
The noble 10th Legion opposed Maximander, offering sanctuary to the Azunite faithful. But it was clear that a war was coming—a battle for the heart of the Empire that our faith might not survive…
