Biography[]
Early Life (before 10th Legion Downfall)[]

Little is known about Hugh Montbarron in general and his life prior to the fall of the 10th Legion. He is a great grandson of two of the most famous heroes of Ehb: Lady Montbarron, commonly known as the Farmer, and one of her companions, Lord Bolingar - the latter on account of marriage of Lady Montbarron's son, Wilhelm (Hugh's grandfather), and an unnamed daughter of Bolingar line.[1] At some point he was included into the Legion, just like the rest of his family, and then elected as Grand Master during the Legion Conclave of 1260.[1]
There's not much knowledge about the state of his family affairs as well. He's known to be married and has at least one son, Lucas, who was born shortly before the fall of the Legion. It is also a somewhat well-known fact among the remnants of the Legion that somewhere around 1262-1263 he had an affair with an unnamed Lescanzi witch, who later gave birth to his (illegitimate) daughter, Katarina.
From the comments of some of the characters, one can generally conclude that during his lifetime, Hugh Montbarron was a man of honor, but stubborn.
Fall of the Legion (1264-65)[]
When King Hendrik began to act with growing hostility towards the Legion, Hugh, who had become the head of the conspiracy against the king, approached him and demanded that Hendrik abdicate in favor of his eldest son. It is not known for certain what exactly happened during this meeting, but the next day Hendrik was found dead.
After his funeral, Jeyne Kassynder appeared out of nowhere and began to stir up the people, claiming that it was the legionnaires who killed the king. Many heeded Jeyne's call. Pogroms swept throughout the kingdom, many legionnaires were killed.

After collecting the remnants of the Legion, Hugh Montbarron went to the valley Rukkenval at Raven's Rill, one of the few remaining places in the kingdom where people did not side with Jane and did not attack the legionnaires. However, there was another reason why Hugh chose this place. Somehow, the Grandmaster knew who Jane really was, and what power lay hidden in Mournweald. He went there in a desperate attempt to find shelter, but his expectations were not met. And in 1265, in the heart of Burning Forest, the last battle of the old legion with Jane Cassinder took place, as a result of which almost all the legionnaires, including Hugh Montbarron, died.
Before the fall of the legion, Hugh Montbarron managed to do very little: he ordered the Transitions to be sealed so that they could not be used against legionnaires, and also, paired with one of the commanders of the legion, Stephan Gunderic, located near Raven's Rill's Heroes' Crypt to prevent the thief from breaking out[2].
Dungeon Siege III[]
In 1294, an old legionary named Odo gathered the legion's descendants in hopes of repelling Jeyne Kassynder. Odo planned to use the Causeways however, being an ordinary scout, not a magician, he had no idea how to print them. The only clue he had at his disposal was the rumor that "the ring of the Grand Master is the key to something important." And since at the time of the last battle of the legion, the ring was on Hugh's finger, Odo sent the surviving legionnaires (including either Lucas or Katarina) to Burning Forest to pick him up.
Hugh's body, like the remains of his people, is located in the heart of Burnwood, at the roots of a dead tree. Thirty years later, there was nothing left but bones clad in the remnants of armor.
Notes[]
- If Lucas is the player’s companion at the time of the first trip to Mournweald, then in response to a remark about his possible unwillingness to go after the ring, he will notice that he knows his father only from the stories of his mother, and therefore “will do without heartfelt speeches”. Still, upon reaching the dead tree in Mournweald - and his father's body - Lucas states that he doesn't like seeing him like this.
- A unique shield can be found near Hugh's body.
