Connections[]

Lang Mire has a rather extensive set of connections to other areas.

  • The quest-related route from Meren that enters Lang Mire by Mount Utrae, marked by torches.
  • A short and direct passage to Elddim. Locals along this route discourage using it, at least when starting out from Elddim. The Krug encountered may be too strong for new characters, to say nothing of the stuff in Lang Mire.
  • A short, wide, but unmarked passage to Redwood Gap that bypasses the Goblin Warrens. When giving directions, the Lang townsfolk direct the player into the warrens, somehow failing to mention this highway.
  • A hidden route to Fallraen (and a long-cut to Meren) through the Sulfur Tunnels.
  • Lang Town has a H.U.B., as well as a legion Displacer linking to forward-activated pads in the depths of the Warrens and the other end of Redwood Gap.

Description[]

Lang Mire is expansive and heavily-populated with monsters. These range from the lowly Swamp Insects and Manglers to the hulking Swamp Creatures and deadly Swamp Witches. The area is designed for players of level 20-35. It is similar to the Eastern Swamp in Ehb. It is much larger, but lacks the interesting landmarks such as the church and the secret underground dungeon.

Its size, combined with its treacherous terrain, infectious diseases, and deadly monsters, rendered it a difficult land for adventurers to explore and map in the course of uniting the Eight Stones of Utrae.

Nestled deep in the region is the tent town of Lang, one of the places of crucial interest in the Townstones quest. Covens of witches, troops of trolls, and other creatures inhabit the still waters and islands that dot them, and circles of fog are common. Rotting cabins and the zombies show evidence of previous human activity and settlement.

To the northwest, the Mire greets the south entrance of the Sulfur Tunnels, a network running beneath this region which may play an integral part in sustaining the morass above. To the east, the land rises and dries into the fertile Elddim Lowlands. To the south of the Mire is the old-growth forest of Redwood Gap, and southeast, the Legion maintains a road through the thicket to Mount Utrae. Close to Lang itself is a descent into the Goblin Warrens.

Dialogue[]

Swamp Tracker
  • "Seeking yer fortunes in the murky waters of Lang Mire, are ye? Ye'll know this place is seething with danger, then, with only the gods-know-what lurking beneath the muck. I'd never be out this way meself, 'cept someone has to wipe the signs clear of mold and trim the wicks on the torches. Lang is a goodly trudge west o' here. Jes follow yer nose -- them torches burn pure troll fat, an' it stinks worse then a swamp witch's breath."
  • (Under red sky) "Pshaw! Betwixt the unholy flashes o' lightning and that powerful stink, I'm not sure which has me more befuddled."
Guard, Elddim route
  • "Hail, friend. Aye, it's true you can reach Lang if you travel west through the swamp, but it's a dangerous journey even for one as experienced as yourself. If it's Elddim you're seeking, you'll find the overland trek east quite lackluster, with a few small bands of roving Krug to contend with."
  • (Level <28) "Egads, traveller, you aren't seriously going to attempt to journey west to Lang through the swamps, are you? You're in no shape for wading through oversized insects in the muck. Head back east through the Lowlands to Elddim where the flies are closer to your size."
  • (Level >32) "Heading west to Lang through the Mire, are you? Be assured, the giant flies will be nothing more than pesky gnats to one as experienced as yourself. Fair travels to you!"
  • (Under red sky) "I can't quite decide if this stench is unusually powerful swamp gas or something more sinister..."

Treasure[]

The four miniboss foes in this region are worth seeking for better drops.

In Veteran and Elite modes, the treasure dropped by The Lost Witch is unusual. She drops a single magic (blue) armor piece, and has a 0.4% and 0.2% chance of dropping rares and uniques respectively, but the quality of each individual item, including the guaranteed blue drop, exceeds that of any other creature including the Chickens and Elite Gom.

The elite Lost Witch is one of the game's only sources of the super-rare Thin Plate armor, and of boots and gauntlets with "overflow" prefixes like +150 Armor or Adds 9 to <skill>. The Lost Witch is attended by other members of her coven at a Life Shrine, north-northeast of Lang proper, and is definitely worth the battle.
