Marten Guiscard is a character in Dungeon Siege III. Legionnaire, acts as a quest giver and temporary companion at various stages of the game.

Biography[]

Marten is the last surviving representative of the ancient Ilionian line of legionnaires[1]. Born and raised in Stonebridge. After the fall of the Legion, he along with the other few surviving descendants of the Legion, was taken under the care of a scout named Odo. Since then, Marten, in between participation in wars (which Guiscard does not like to talk about[2]), faithfully serves Odo as a messenger, bodyguard - and voice of reason , who occasionally upsets the overly determined old man[2].

Marten Guiscard is a noble and honest man, true to the principles of the old legion - which is why between him and Odo, who calls Guiscard an "idealist", ideological differences arise from time to time[2].

Marten Guiscard (comic)

Dungeon Siege III comic.

In 1272, Odo sends Marten to Stonebridge on a mission to find a 12-year-old boy named Reinhart. Reinhart is the last descendant of an ancient line of legionnaires, and he must be protected at all costs. Marten, despite his apparent reluctance to return to his hometown, with which he has painful memories, successfully completes the task and finds Reinhart, but he refuses to run away from the city. Reinhart is revealed to have taken refuge at Stonebridge Collegium, under the tutelage of the Goblin Professor Gibberghast. The latter, as it turned out, was an old friend of the Guiscard family: he kept letters written by Marten's father, which the Gibberghast was supposed to give to Marten some time after the fall of the Legion, but did not have time, as Marten left the city. After receiving the letters, Marten leaves Reinhart under the protection of the College, and he returns to Odo, whom he thanks for the opportunity to deal with his past.

Game[]

Anjali and Marten (en route to legion chapterhouse)

Marten and Anjali on their way to Rukkenval.

The player character first encounters him at the very beginning of the game, in the burning Montbarron Manor, where Marten is trying to find the descendants of the legion who survived the massacre staged by the mercenaries Lescanzi. Guiscard proposes to set a trap for the mercenaries, blow up the bridge - and at the same time the entire estate, along with the remaining enemies, after which he leads the hero to the Rukkenvahl valley, to the old legion fortification, answering some questions along the way. At the entrance to the fort, they are intercepted by Lescanzi mercenaries led by Bogdan, and during the fight, Marten receives a bullet wound - in his own words, the first in his life[2]. Because of this, Marten was forced to stay in the fort, where he, if possible, restored his strength for the subsequent attack on the Upper Raven's Rill.

After defeating Rajani Giscard, in defiance of Lazar, offers to let her go[2].

Until the opening of the fort at Stonebridge, he remained in Rukkenvahl, helping the locals rebuild [2]. Afterwards, it can be found in the Transition Hall Great Fortress.

History (DSIII)

After defeating Jane's forces (endgame).

During the siege of the Spire along with Sigmund Wulf commanded an army of automatons that attacked the city of Aegis Bay at the foot of the mountain as a distraction.

Notes[]

  • There are some inconsistencies between the in-game and comic versions of Marten's biography. It is mentioned on two occasions in the game that Guiscard's father was killed in Mournweald, during the last fight of Hugh Montbarron[2]. The comic also says that Marten's family was killed during the riots in Stonebridge[3].
  • If Eleanor is persuaded to join the Legion in Treasures of The Sun, she will move from Abbey of St. Hiram to Great fortification, and after some time in one of the remarks she will notice that Marten offered to show her the city - and that, as it seems to her, his intentions are the most serious[2].
  • Shield of Marten according to the in-game classification refers to the Norman. The same ones used in battle by Lucas, the only shield-bearer of the entire legionaryand four characters. This type of shields will only start to appear on a permanent basis after the Stone Bridge.
  • Marten was originally voiced by the same actor as Brynjolf in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
