Details[]

Those Marked with Fire are likely to pass through this wilderness to reach Lang. The mountain is a segmented and rather complex area.

The singular bona-fied region of Mt. Utrae, internally labeled df2ds (dark forest-to-dark swamp, referring to Ehb analogue locations since the team built Ehb first), runs through about five different tilesets, helping to give the journey a sense of rapidly-shifting elevations. Further to this end, a number of area transitions are announced to the player along the highway. From the forest-end to the swamp-end:

Mount Utrae Foothills[]

The Mt. Utrae Foothills are a small, hilly green area located where the Cloud Forest ends and Mt. Utrae begins. There are many bandits; who guard two treasure chests in a recess on a narrow cliff-ledge. The land of this area is elevated above the Utraean Peninsula's eastern coast; some beaches are visible at the bottom, and seagulls can be heard.

After one loots the treasure chests, he/she will only go higher, eventually leading to the short, also-vertical cave that ends at the Mt. Utrae Alpine Reaches.

Mount Utrae Alpine Reaches[]

RogueBandit

The bandits in this area are clustered in very large parties— more so than in the Cloud Forest. The camera angle limitations when ascending the slope are likely to cause poor visibility.

Located on the lower southeastern slopes of Mount Utrae above the Mount Utrae Foothills, its Alpine Reaches are forested, rainy, and vertical. The only way is up, and the ramps are heavily guarded by Bandits. This is because the Rogue Bandit has his lair shortly ahead, just shy of the Summit. The merchant Endar Gareth does business partway up the slope, supplying adventurers with the equipment required to fight the Rogue Bandit in exchange for gold. The arboreal slopes soon end in a rising cave that contains treasure chests and lots of bandit guards. Once one sees snow, he/she is on the border of the Mount Utrae Summit.

Mount Utrae Summit[]

This location is indeed the summit of Mount Utrae, highest point of the Peninsula. There are neither bandits nor wildlife in this area: only some stunted flora and bad weather.

North of the summit is, namely, the Mount Utrae North Slope; connected to the peak by a wooden bridge. The only known routes to the top are via the northern slope and by the Mount Utrae Alpine Reaches trail. Due to the constant snowfall and thick gray clouds, one cannot see very far from the top.

Mount Utrae North Slope[]

MountUtraeSlope

The summit and north slope are the third quarter of the trek from Meren to Lang. It ends at the mountain's base in Lang Mire, at an entry point into the swamp east-southeast of Lang town. In this region, bandit numbers are zilch. The lower one goes, snowbanks give way to forest; albeit more moist and humid than average. A rushing river and a steep downward incline add energy to this portion of the Meren-Lang journey, which is perhaps the most peaceful stretch of wilderness in the Peninsula other the Endless Dunes. There is nary an enemy to be seen from the Summit almost down to swamp level. Swamp creatures, willows, cypress, and giant fungi become common as the land levels out, eventually disintegrating into the murky expanse of the Lang Mire.

Endar Gareth, the ex-bandit wheeler-dealer back in the Mount Utrae Alpine Reaches, claims that a coven of Swamp Witches controls the north slope of the mountain and that the Cloud Forest bandits, fearing their magic, do not approach this area. Like the Summit, the northern slope is clear of hostiles until one approaches the lower altitudes. There is a Swamp Troll miniboss among the creatures at the foot of the mountain, and there are indeed some Witches.

Dialogue[]

Endar Gareth
  • "It's not often travellers come through bandit territory. Would be a shame to leave them nothing to take off your corpse. Heh heh."
  • "I was once a bit of a bandit myself. Now I trade with all and pick up the trinkets lying about after they kill each other. Touchy folk, bandits are."
  • "Here on the lower slopes of Mt. Utrae it's Belwar and his band who choose if you live or die. You might escape them at the tree line near the summit, but the coven of swamp witches on the southern slopes will never let you pass alive. Still, with gold in your pockets, perhaps you could bribe them?"
  • (Under red sky) "Blech, my stomach's all queasy. Who would have thought that pure mountain air could become so vile?"
